Roma Complete Blockbuster Dovbyk Signing from Girona

Roma have formally announced the acquisition of Artem Dovbyk after overtaking Atletico Madrid at the last corner and reaching an agreement with Girona. The marksman will cost them up to €38.5M considering the €30.5M fee, €5.5M add-ons, and a 10 percent resale clause, Corriere dello Sport informs.

The striker gave up €1.5M he was owed to facilitate the negotiation; otherwise, the Giallorossi would have had to pay €40M. Their owner Dan Friedkin was instrumental in their pursuit as he personally explained their project and ambitions to the star. The pursuit caused the marksman to change his mind about joining the Colchoneros despite advanced talks with his previous team and his camp. He denied that the deal fell through due to the commissions.

Roma didn’t even try to bring back Romelu Lukaku after a loan spell and, after probing a few options, for instance, Villarreal’s Alexander Sorloth and Lille’s Jonathan David, found an opening for Dovbyk. A Serie A team is signing La Liga’s ‘pichichi’ for the first time since Lazio acquired Christian Vieri from Atletico Madrid in 1997.

After a few productive seasons at Dnipro, he recorded 24 goals and 8 assists in Spain in 2023/2024. He played in Norway earlier in his career. He has accumulated 31 caps and hit the net 10 times with Ukraine.

Our Take on Roma and Dovbyk

Unless Juventus pull off what they have in mind, it’ll be the signature signing of the summer. His scoring touch should easily translate because he’s experienced and he has had success in different leagues and internationally already. It helps that he’s more technical and mobile than Lukaku.
