Roma Considering Acquiring New Starting Goalkeeper

Since they have gotten uneven performances from their goalkeepers, Roma are pondering signing a new starter in January and have discussed a swap of loans between Pau Lopez and Salvatore Sirigu with Torino, Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Pau Lopez was the most expensive purchase in such role in club’s history as he was acquired from Real Betis for €23.5M in the summer of 2019, but he has been very unreliable since the summer restart, parly due to a wrist microfracture, to the point that he has been demoted in favor of Antonio Mirante. The veteran got off to a decent start in the ongoing campaign but he too tailed off recently, with some blunders in the road losses against Napoli and Atalanta.

Sirigu has been a bit embattled himself as he was replaced by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in the last two matches and, while he is expected to reclaim the starting job soon, he is open to leaving. The outlet adds that, if the two sides can not pull off the trade, the Giallorossi will stand pat and try to acquire Pierluigi Gollini or Marco Silvestri in the summer.

Our View:

Roma are in a tough spot as it is harmful to have uncertainty between the sticks: while Sirigu has been declining for the past year and a half, he might bounce back behind a better defense and, under the reported conditions, he could be a decent stopgap until they find their future #1. Pau Lopez would likely benefit from a change of scenery as well and he would have less pressure with the Granata
