Roma Dealing with Plenty of Uncertainty in the Midfield

Roma will have to address their midfield with multiple summer moves. They have several moving pieces in the role. On top of the long-standing absence of a maestro, the Giallorossi risk losing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, might not keep Sergio Olivera, and wish to sell Jordan Veretout.

According to Alfredo Pedullà, the brass had some contacts with the Armenian veteran. They have not raised their proposal but tried to talk him into taking it. Inter remain confident of their chances, though.

In addition, the Giallorossi are leaning towards letting Olivera walk. The Portuguese international hinted at it while talking to the press during an event (via Corriere dello Sport).

“The most important thing for me is to keep winning. I am under contract with Porto, and I will rest and re-charge my batteries now. My two teams lifted three trophies this season, which is great. I was not featuring with continuity and wished to try playing abroad and challenge myself when I elected to transfer. It went well.”

According to Il Tempo, the club will let their €13M clause lapse but will attempt to retain the 29-year-old for a lower sum later on. José Mourinho has expressed his preferences to shore up the Roma midfield. He wants to onboard Maxime Lopez and Nemanja Matic. Yves Bissouma is the latest addition to the shortlist, Sky relays.

Our Take on the Roma Midfield

The Giallorossi probably have more question marks than they would like after the first season with the Special One. Mkhitaryan departing would open up a major void despite his age. Lopez would be a brilliant signing, but they have to move quickly to snatch him. Matic on a free would be fine since Roma need a few additions in the midfield and can not splurge for all of them.
