Negotiations between Roma and Al-Ahli over Roger Ibanez’s shock switch to Jeddah have picked up momentum. As per Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian defender has already agreed personal terms with the newly-promoted Saudi Pro League outfit.
It’s now up to Al-Ahli to convince Roma to give up one of their first-team stalwarts. It’s believed Ibanez’s move to the Middle East could pour around €35 million, including add-ons, into the Italians’ bank accounts. That figure would allow Jose Mourinho to sign a quality replacement.
If everything goes according to plan, Ibanez could undergo his medicals in Paris. There’s a feeling it’s a matter of hours. Mourinho has omitted the 24-year-old from his squad for Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Toulouse.
After one season at Atalanta, Ibanez joined Roma initially on loan in 2020 before earning a permanent contract the following summer. The Canela native made 48 competitive appearances for the Giallorossi last term. He helped the club reach the Europa League final, only to miss out on the title to Sevilla.
While the first instinct was to keep hold of Ibanez, Roma have changed their mind after capturing Evan Ndicka and Diego Llorente. Their arrivals have covered Mourinho’s defensive options, facilitating the decision to sell the Fluminense academy graduate.
The Saudi Pro League heavyweights are simultaneously working on several deals with Italian clubs. In addition to ongoing talks with Roma for Ibanez, Al-Ahli have submitted a formal bid to sign Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
