Roma are one defender short following the summer window, but the solution is unlikely to come from the free agent pool. The Giallorossi have mulled the available options, but an addition is not imminent.
Director Tiago Pinto shut the door on such possibility to DAZN before the Udinese drubbing.
“I have been clear in my previous remarks. Our transfer market is closed. We have to be completely focused on the pitch until the World Cup break. I’m confident our daily work will help us get the results we aim for. I’m tired of the rumors. We will revisit the role in January.”
On top of discussing the possible addition of a defender, the Roma exec commented on Nicolò Zaniolo, as the talks to extend his contract will begin soon.
“We have a great relationship with him and his agent Claudio Vigorelli. He had to re-find his footing last season. This current one will be important for him and for us. We have a pact with his representative, so the journalists can keep speculating about it. But it will never be an issue for us.”
As per Calciomercato, the Giallorossi would have Nikola Maksimovic atop the shortlist if they did decide to bring in a center-back. Dan-Axel Zagadou was offered to them during the summer, while Jason Denayer and Edgar Ié more recently.
Our Take on Roma Not Adding a Free Agent Defender
They could clearly use an extra body in the back, but signing somebody just for the sake of it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Maksimovic showed to have little left in the tank last season. Younger options would be more palatable. Zagadou must be in rough shape if he’s still unsigned.
