Roma Earmark Two Talents as Potential Mkhitaryan Successors

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has turned his season around after an underwhelming start when he even butted heads with José Mourinho at the beginning of their Roma reunion. His performances visibly improved once he started to play as a box-to-box in 3-5-2. On the other hand, the turn of events might not change his future at the club, as his contract expires in just a few months.

The 33-year-old has considerable wages, as he makes €3M per year. The Giallorossi have already started to scout some possible replacements, La Repubblica informs. Roma and Mkhitaryan almost parted ways last summer already. While he is faring better, he is no longer seen as a vital cog as when Paulo Fonseca was at the helm. He tallied 13 goals, and 10 assists in 34 Serie A matches in 2020-2021. He has hit the net three times and set up five teammates at the midway point of the current season.

According to the publication, the management has not approached the attacker to discuss an extension. At this stage, the most likely outcome is a natural partying of the ways in June. The front office aims to make the squad younger and reduce the payroll.

Starlet Felix Afena-Gyan is in line to have a bigger role in the next campaign. In addition, Roma have shortlisted a pair of young talents to substitute Mkhitaryan, Stephy Mavididi and Benjamin Sesko. The former has blossomed at Montpellier after spending time at Juventus U-23. The latter is turning heads at RB Salzburg considering that he is just 18.
