Roma Flop Set to Continue His Career in La Liga

Sardar Azmoun’s season-long loan at Roma didn’t pan out as expected, and the Iran international will soon return to his parent club, Bayer Leverkusen. However, he has no future at the BayArena and could continue his career in La Liga, with Sevilla considering a summer swoop for the Giallorossi flop, reports Calciomercato.

Roma brought Azmoun on loan toward the end of the last summer transfer window amid intense negotiations to sign Romelu Lukaku on a temporary deal. When Chelsea finally sanctioned the Belgian’s switch on the deadline day, the 29-year-old was already at the Stadio Olimpico.

Former Roma manager Jose Mourinho needed a reliable center-forward option to fill the void left by Tammy Abraham’s long-term injury. Despite his troubles in the Bundesliga, Azmoun emerged as a decent solution in times of emergency. But it was a poor call.

Azmoun has never found his feet in Serie A, managing just three goals in 23 league appearances. As such, Roma didn’t have to think twice before passing on the chance to land him permanently for €12.5 million. The ex-Zenit forward will return to Leverkusen at the end of the month, but only to move on.

Blind to Azmoun’s struggles at Roma, Sevilla are ready to give him the benefit of the doubt. Given the club’s current situation, any acquisition is welcome. As for Daniele De Rossi’s men, the Iranian’s impending exit will not be the only departure in the attacking department.

Lukaku is heading back to Chelsea as Roma can’t handle the financial aspect of the deal, even though they’d gladly keep hold of him beyond the summer.
