Talks between Roma and Paris Saint-Germain over Leandro Paredes’ return to the Stadio Olimpico have gained momentum. According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between the parties are in ‘advanced stages.’
Paredes have already agreed to rejoin Roma after falling out of favor in Paris. Jose Mourinho’s men are closing in on his arrival in light of Nemanja Matic’s imminent transfer to Rennes. The Serbian is hellbent on moving to Ligue 1 despite his household status in the capital.
With Matic ready to wave goodbye, Paredes looks set to fill the vacancy. PSG cannot get rid of the Argentine soon enough, having deemed him surplus to requirements a year ago. Last season’s underwhelming loan spell at Juventus failed to reignite his first-team prospects in Paris.
Desperate for a fresh start, the 29-year-old is willing to return to familiar surroundings. Roma helped Paredes earn worldwide recognition between 2014 and 2017. His first stint at the Stadio Olimpico was a resounding success.
Paredes’ rise to prominence at Roma convinced Zenit St Petersburg to shell out €23 million plus add-ons to take him to Russia six years ago. A move to PSG in January 2019 was a mistake, but the Argentina international still has plenty of time to get his career back on track.
Last year’s return to Serie A didn’t help. But it’s fair to say he linked up with Juventus at the worst possible moment.
