Roma Interested in Underwhelming Atalanta Newcomer

Roma might have to address their left flank and have earmarked Mitchel Bakker, who has struggled right out the gate at Atalanta. Leonardo Spinazzola is on an expiring contract and Nicola Zalewski hasn’t been entirely convincing. The Giallorossi could opt to turn a profit on him should they get a good offer, Calciomercato informs.

The club hasn’t been proactive in trying to retain the Italian veteran. He could receive interest from Saudi Arabia again in January. It remains to be seen whether he’ll jump ship, though. It might affect his goal of making the Italy squad for Euro 2024.

Roma took a close look at Bakker while he was at Bayer Leverkusen last season, and José Mourinho reportedly liked him. Atalanta signed him for €10M last summer. He has played just 42 minutes due to Matteo Ruggeri blossoming and Sead Kolasinac’s versatility.

The Giallorossi could ask for the Dutch on loan with a slightly superior option to buy. They have also set sights on Rangers’ Borna Barisic, who’s more of a target for a Bosman addition. They face competition from Aston Villa.

Our Take on Roma and Bakker

He has shown very little so far and evidently didn’t make a good impression on Gian Piero Gasperini. La Dea has occasionally moved on quickly from players, but they’d need to be financially motivated to send him to a direct competitor.
