Roma Not Pondering to Onboard a New Starting Goalie

Rui Patricio hasn’t been spotless during his time with Roma, but the club isn’t actively looking for a new goalkeeper, despite some rumors. The Giallorossi have been attached to Guglielmo Vicario and other Serie A options.

According to Augusto Ciardi, the capital side will have different priorities in the summer. They need to tread carefully due to their Financial Fair Play constraints. They won’t be able to spend that much and have more glaring holes to address first.

Patricio joined Roma in a €11.8M move from Wolverhampton in July 2021. José Mourinho was the biggest proponent of his acquisition and continues to trust the goalie completely. The coach is poised to stay put even though he occasionally expressed his reservations about it.

Since the goalie is 35, his sale wouldn’t fetch much. The Giallorossi would have to invest to bring a younger option. Before considering a switch between the sticks, they’ll have to sign one or more defenders, a right wing-back, as Rick Karsdorp is likely to depart, at least one midfielder, plus they’ll need to discuss with PSG to redeem Georginio Wijnaldum, and bolster their attack, where Tammy Abraham and Andrea Belotti face an uncertain future.

Our Take on Roma and Patricio

He’s solid but unspectacular and had some blunders here and there. There’s a middle class of Italian goalies that could do well at a big team too and wouldn’t be too expensive. However, he hasn’t totally fallen off, and it’s easy to imagine he’ll continue to be the starter as long as Mourinho is in town.
