Roma on The Verge of Signing Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic is on the cusp of penning a short-term contract at Roma after running down his contract at Manchester United. According to famous journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Giallorossi will tie the ex-Serbia international down to a one-year contract.

Matic will sign a season-long deal with an option to extend for another year. The 33-year-old has spent the last eight years in the Premier League. After an impressive three years at Chelsea, he moved to Man United in 2017 at Jose Mourinho’s personal request.

The Portuguese manager has again insisted on Matic’s signing to strengthen his options in the middle of the park. Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini were Mourinho’s best-performing midfielders last season.

However, a lack of reliable backup options has forced Mourinho’s hand.

Our take on Matic’s impending move to Roma

Despite Matic being in the autumn of his playing career, he could be a massive coup for Roma. His experience and slick passing would add another dimension to Mourinho’s set-up.

With Matic covering a place in the double-pivot in front of the backline, Pellegrini should have much more freedom to burst forward. Freeing up the Italy international to move into the channels would improve the creativity in the final third.

It may take some time for Matic to get back into shape after playing second fiddle at Man United for the majority of last season. He made only 16 Premier League starts in 2021/22.

And even though his playing time was at a premium, the Serb reeled off some eye-catching displays. That should encourage the Roma fans ahead of Matic’s impending arrival.
