Roma threw away a one-goal advantage right at the death in Florence on Saturday as they lost 2-1 against Fiorentina. Stephan El Shaarawy had opened the scoring for the Giallorossi as Fiorentina dominated possession but struggled to make the most of it in the opening period.
However, goals from Luka Jovic and Jonathan Ikone inside five minutes late on would secure the victory for the hosts which ends Roma’s hopes of finishing in the top-four. So, here’s our Roma player ratings for their 2-1 defeat away to Fiorentina.
Roma: (4-2-3-1)
Mile Svilar – 5
Made a few simple saves here but perhaps could have been more commanding in the box for the two Fiorentina goals.
Filippo Missori – 4
Booked in the first half. Raw display still by the 19-year-old and got out-jumped for the equalizer before being beaten by Aleksa Terzic in the lead up to Ikone’s winner.
Chris Smalling – 7
Launched the Roma attack for the opener with a good ball from deep. Was a threat with his passing from the back and looked strong in defense when called upon. Subbed off at half time for Gianluca Mancini and the Roma defense missed his presence.
Diego Llorente – 6
Made a last-ditch tackle to stop Jovic from close range around ten minutes after the break. Decent display at the back for the most part.
Nicola Zalewski – 6.5
Didn’t really put a foot wrong defensively and was subbed off before Roma conceded.
Benjamin Tahirovic – 4.5
Didn’t see much of the ball since the hosts dominated possession. Didn’t make any mistakes but failed to take charge of the midfield battle. Overrun.
Edoardo Bove – 5
Hardly saw the ball but made a couple of tackles throughout. Didn’t make much impact.
Ola Solbakken – 6
Assisted El Shaarawy’s goal with a simple header and put in a decent display here in what was an encouraging performance.
Georginio Wijnaldum – 4
Scarcely involved in possession, completing just three passes despite playing an hour in Florence. Nowhere near influential enough. Subbed off after an hour for Bryan Cristante.
Stephan El Shaarawy – 7.5
Put the visitors ahead with a simple finish from close range to score in back-to-back matches for the Giallorossi. Looked lively and creative. Caused problems for the Fiorentina defense.
Andrea Belotti – 6.5
Good centre-forward play in the build-up to El Shaarawy’s opener with a lovely cross towards the back post. Influence dwindled in the second half but was impressive in the first.
Substitutions
Gianluca Mancini – 5
Wasn’t as imposing as Smalling at the back. Could have done better here.
Zeki Celik – 5
Didn’t do too many positive things when introduced.
Bryan Cristante – 5
Failed to make much impact.
