Roma Set to Keep Nzonzi for At Least Another Year

Steven Nzonzi’s Roma stay looks to be set as the defensive midfielder seems hell bent on seeing out his contract with the Giallorossi which expires in June 2022.

He has so far rejected a host of offers from clubs from not only Europe but also from Middle East most recently, as an unnamed side from Qatar, most likely Al-Rayyan, offered him a three-year contract with wages higher than his current €3m cap.

French champions Lille and Ligue 1 heavyweights Olympique de Marseille were the other clubs to have expressed their interest in him.

The 2018 World Cup winner is also said to have rejected advances from Portuguese giants Benfica, who offered him a three-year contract deal.

The Giallorossi have long been keen on offloading Nzonzi and relieving his salary from the club’s account books. He has spent the last three seasons on loan at two different clubs – at Rennes and Galatasaray respectively.

It was reported earlier by Il Corriere dello Sport, he will accept an exit only if Roma compensate him with €1.5m to terminate his contract.

He has appeared just 39 times for Roma, in the 2018/19 season – his only season for the club since moving from Sevilla in 2018.
