Roma Spearhead Race for Out-of-Favor Arsenal Defender

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin, who spent 2021/22 on a fruitful loan spell at Real Betis in La Liga, is being eyed by Italian heavyweights for a summer transfer. The Spaniard doesn’t see a future for himself at the Emirates Stadium as he is reportedly not in Mikel Arteta’s plans for next season.

According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, the fullback prefers to extend his stay with the Verdiblancos with a permanent transfer after helping them lift their first major title since 2005 with the Copa Del Rey win this campaign.

Among the clubs interested in the La Masia youth product’s services are Jose Mourinho’s Roma, who look like serious suitors as they see Bellerin as Rick Karsdorp’s direct replacement, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato.it).

The Giallorossi were reportedly ‘priced out’ of a move for Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, thus forcing them to channel their attention towards the out-of-favor Arsenal wingback. Tuttomercatoweb also reports of potential interest from Juventus, Fiorentina and Inter.

Bellerin released an emotional statement to Betis fans at the end of the season, stating that it was a ‘dream come true’ to play for the club and expressing his sadness at leaving the club.

While Real Betis’ stance is currently unknown, Roma are preparing to handsomely fund their summer market after winning their first European trophy in over sixty years, and Bellerin is up there as a transfer favorite with his €20M transfermarkt value. His contract at Arsenal expires at the end of next season.
