Roma Star Striker Abraham Tears ACL in Season Finale

While Roma obtained the result they were looking for against Spezia, the match ended on a somber note as Tammy Abraham suffered a major knee injury about 15 minutes after coming off the bench. The striker was diagnosed with an ACL tear in his left knee a few hours after the final whistle, Il Messaggero reports.

The marksman will miss at least the next five or six months and potentially more. It will hinge on how the rehab goes. He’s unlikely to return on the pitch in 2023. He closed the season with 9 goals and 7 assists in 54 appearances across all competitions.

The turn of events will affect Roma on the transfer market massively. Abraham was one of the players the Giallorossi could prospectively cash in on to raise some money and skirt the Financial Fair Play restrictions. They recently rebuffed a €27M offer from Everton, Corriere dello Sport informs.

Chelsea have an €80M buy-back clause stemming from his previous transfer. However, that was already a far-fetched proposition considering the sum and his performances.

Our Take on the Abraham Injury

It’s an unfortunate ending to a weird year for the Englishman, who took a step back for mysterious reasons and wasn’t helped by the posture of his side. The immediate ramification should be the Giallorossi picking up the option to extend Andrea Belotti’s contract, even though he has scored zero Serie A goals this campaign. They can’t realistically conceive signing two elite strikers. Then, they will have to be very creative.
