Roma Tipped to Try Bringing In Rennes Defender Theate

More names are popping up on the Roma radar, as they are hard at work to find a new defender, and Arthur Theate is the latest entry in the list. The Giallorossi and Rennes have mended fences following the Nemanja Matic deal. The veteran asked out abruptly to specifically move to Brittany last summer, Corriere dello Sport informs.

The deal would have good chances of coming together if the Ligue 1 outfit agreed to an initial loan. A permanent transfer is out of the question since they disbursed €19M to sign him from Bologna in July 2022.

Theate would like to depart since he’s not on great terms with coach Bruno Genesio, which favors Roma. On the other hand, they’d need to come to terms on a likely convoluted formula with Rennes given their skimpy budget and financial limitations.

The defender has been an unused sub a couple of times due to disagreements with the coach. He desires to be a regular to earn a spot in the Belgium roster for Euro 2024. He wouldn’t mind returning to Italy, where he previously featured 31 times in his lone season with Bologna.

Our Take on Theate and Roma

He’d be an ideal option, but signing him would be a no-confidence vote toward Evan N’Dicka, who inked a long-term contract, as the two aren’t compatible. Milan should be after him as well if he’s really available.
