Roma Touched Base with Bayer Leverkusen’s Manager

The Roma ownership will have big decisions to make at the end of the season since José Mourinho and director Tiago Pinto are both on expiring deals. Despite the Special One’s public remarks, the exec appears to have better chances of staying.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the brass is starting to lay the foundation for the future. They reached out to Xabi Alonso, who’s excelling at Bayer Leverkusen. He’s an understudy of their current coach, and their playing style is similar. The young gaffer has politely repelled the early advances, stating to be fully focused on Die Aspirin.

The Spaniard will be a candidate should Roma really move on from Mourinho. However, he’s also on Real Madrid’s shortlist, if Carlo Ancelotti leaves and takes over Brazil. The Italian gaffer has been heavily hinting at his permanence, though. He and Los Blancos would have to agree to a new contract for that to happen. Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on the up-and-comer.

The Giallorossi reportedly spoke to the Liverpool icon through an intermediary in Koln but received a negative response after asking about his availability.

In the meantime, current sporting director Pinto met with Frederic Massara, who has been Paolo Maldini’s right-hand man at Milan in recent campaigns. They discussed his potential return at Roma, as he was already at the club with Walter Sabatini and then solo for a few months. The two would split duties and work under CEO Lina Souloukou.
