Roma Trail Only Two English Clubs among Biggest Summer Spenders

Serie A endured a rough summer window from an economic standpoint. Four of the biggest stars in the League moved abroad. Cristiano Ronaldo transferred to Manchester United, Achraf Hakimi and Gianluigi Donnarumma now play for PSG, while Romelu Lukaku returned to Chelsea. But not every team was cash-strapped, as Roma were one of the biggest spenders in Europe.

According to DribLab, they come in third place in the entire continent. The company examined the balance between acquisitions and departures. Arsenal are atop of the chart with €136,2M spent. Manchester United are in the second position with €110,9M, while Roma invested a total of €97.8M. The Premier League dominates the 25-team ranking with 11 outfits. Serie A and Ligue 1 have five representatives each, La Liga and Bundesliga two.

Roma bolstered the roster with a few select purchases after appointing José Mourinho. They replaced Edin Dzeko with Tammy Abraham, who joined in a €40M move. They signed Rui Patricio for €11.5M from Wolverhampton to fix their multi-year problem between the sticks. Eldor Shomurodov was acquired from Genoa for €17.5M to round out the frontline. Finally, they spent €13M for Matias Vina after Leonardo Spinazzola tore his Achilles tendon in the Euro.

Roma let go a lot of players, but without gaining much. Dzeko, Pedro, Javier Pastore, and Bruno Peres all left on free transfers. Alessandro Florenzi, Justin Kluivert, Pau Lopez, and Cengiz Under departed on loan. Their deals all have options to buy, but there is no guarantee their new sides will indeed activate them.
