Roma Wingback Admits Being One Step Away From Leaving This Summer

Roma wingback Nicola Zalewski has broken his silence on a busted transfer to Galatasaray in September. It’s been a month since the Poland international turned down a switch to Istanbul, triggering mixed feelings at the Stadio Olimpico.

With Zalewski’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Roma hoped to broker his move to Galatasaray to avoid losing him for free in less than 12 months. However, the deal collapsed at the 11th hour as the 22-year-old pulled the plug at the last minute.

Zalewski’s actions left former Roma boss Daniele De Rossi fuming. He punished the homegrown Giallorossi starlet by sending him into exile. But after De Rossi’s dismissal in mid-September, the youngster has been reinstated, with new manager Ivan Juric handing him his first Serie A start since matchday one against Monza last time out.

In the meantime, Roma and Zalewski’s entourage have opened talks over a long-awaited contract renewal. Things seem to be going back to normal as Zalewski finally told his side of the story while away on international duty with Poland.

I won’t lie: I was very close to completing the transfer to Galatasaray,” the Roma ace said, as reported by Calciomercato. “There was a very good offer on the table, but I thought it over, I spoke to my family, and I think that I did what was the best thing for me.

I have played recently and got back into the squad, so I am very happy. My objective is to play football and enjoy myself.

Despite Zalewski’s return to fans’ good grace, Roma are still in the market for a new winger to reinforce Juric’s attacking options.
