Roma Would Rather Trim Defense Before Adding Hummels

Roma have shown significant interest in onboarding Mats Hummels on a free but need Chris Smalling to depart first. They wish to swap out one veteran defender for another. Mallorca are tracking the German center-back as well but haven’t swayed him just yet, La Repubblica informs.

The Borussia Dortmund stalwart is eager for a new experience and prioritizes staying in Europe over the offers coming from the MLS, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. He appears willing to wait for the Giallorossi at this stage.

Roma are relatively set in the back, especially should they bring Diego Llorente back from Leeds United, and plot to offload Smalling before signing Hummels. They have instructed his agents to find a new home for him, most likely on a free. However, he’s not drawing much attention for now. He could end up in the Middle East.

The Englishman has featured just 12 times last season due to a lingering knee injury. He wasn’t a regular when healthy. Daniele De Rossi preferred other options. As for the prospective newcomer, he’d earn €3.5M for the next two years, Leggo relays. The Giallorossi are working on the commissions and the other demands by his camp.

Our Take on Roma, Hummels, and Smalling

It would be a slight improvement since the latter is a lot healthier and a better ball-handler. All in all, they are in a good spot with Gianluca Mancini and Evan N’Dicka. A touch-up could be enough, especially considering their glaring holes elsewhere.

  1. Good news, Roma should invest in talent that can eventually be sold with a profit or at least turn even.

I guess there are better options to develop the talent for the money they have to pay on agents fees for this Dortmund legend.
