New Roma hero Romelu Lukaku has highlighted the importance of his friendly relationship with Jose Moutinho for his outrageous start to life at the Stadio Olimpico. The 30-year-old notched up a brace as Giallorossi battered promoted Cagliari 4-1 on Sunday to make it three wins on the trot and save the Special One’s skin.
Lukaku has been in phenomenal form since joining Roma on loan from Chelsea in the final days of the summer transfer window. Since making his first Serie A start in a 7-0 rout of Empoli, the Belgium international has found the net in six out of seven appearances for Giallorossi across all competitions.
Even though his move to Roma went slightly under the radar following a summer-long saga concerning his busted return to Inter, Lukaku looks hellbent on taking Serie A by storm again. Working with Mourinho, who brokered his transfer to Manchester United back in the day, also plays into his hands.
“I prove on the pitch what I can give to a team. Today things went well,” the Roma striker said, as relayed by Tuttomercatoweb.
Lukaku also delivered his verdict on his long-standing relationship with Mourinho.
“As I’ve said in the past, he and I have a special relationship. He knows m and my children,” the Roma ace. “He’s someone I can trust, and he puts his trust in me. He’s tough, but that’s the only way that I can grow.”
