Bayern Munich exec and Inter legend Karl-Heinze Rummenigge addressed the talks between the two sides last summer when the Nerazzurri successfully acquired Benjamin Pavard and Yann Sommer. He attended a sports festival in Trento on Thursday (via Tuttomercatoweb).
“They didn’t pay a lot for the defender but rather the right price. They signed somebody who won the World Cup, went to Qatar, and starred for Bayern for four years, lifting four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League. He’s a top-level player.”
“Pavard wanted to join Inter. It was his choice. He wished to feature as a center-back. He wouldn’t have been able to do that with us considering Matthijs De Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, and Kim-Min Jae. In the end, we came to terms with them and my friend Giuseppe Marotta. Everybody’s happy.”
Rummenigge further weighed in on the two signings.
“Inter have been busy on the German market lately. They bought our goalie Yann Sommer too. The negotiation was long, but we were on the same page. The Pavard deal was more complicated because we didn’t want to sell. They spent an important sum considering he had just a year on his contract. Ultimately, we greenlighted his departure. Marcus Thuram is very strong too, and he joined on a Bosman move.”
“They have to correct one defect though, as they must stop dropping points against the minnows. Simone Inzaghi gave them a nice and spectacular style, but they have to win games like the Bologna one.”
