Sabatini Turns Down Genoa Job, Snipes Juventus for Probe

Walter Sabatini could have become the Genoa sporting director, but he refused: “We had different visions on how to manage the club, and there were not the premises to seal the deal,” the executive explained. He also attacked Juventus for the ongoing financial investigation.

Sabatini talked about the plusvalenze to Radio Radio: “When I was at Roma, we did plenty of them, but they were all real and clean. Most of the recent ones are fake, and those who made mistakes should pay. Football should not grind to a halt because of his problem, but there need to be fair sanctions.”

Sabatini looked back at his Roma days: “I thought we could really win the title with Rudi Garcia at the helm. The squad was really strong that year. There were three dubious calls in the clash with Juventus, all in their favor. Later on, referee Gianluca Rocchi told me that, if he could, he would erase that game from his life. It could have had a different outcome. Despite that, I never sensed a persecutory climate against the Giallorossi.”

The veteran director weighed in on his former presidents: “Maurizio Zamparini is football savant, but you are always on a roller coaster with him. Claudio Lotito is the best possible owner for Lazio. They had almost gone bankrupt before he took over. I have seen the power of the Zhang family in China. He is a demi-god there and has nauseating wealth.”

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, after the refusal by Sabatini, Vitesse’s technical director Johannes Spors is the leading candidate for an apical role inside the Genoa management. He was previously part of the Ralf Rangnick staff at RB Leipzig.
