Bologna boss Thiago Motta has impressed more than most since he began his tenure in Emilia-Romagna last year, with Italy icon Arrigo Sacchi one of his admirers.
Speaking to Corriere di Bologna (via TuttoBolognaweb), Sacchi heaped praise on Motta for his managerial qualities and also pointed out one striker in the Rossoblù roster.
“I like Bologna because they play well. The team expresses itself, is young, even if perhaps they don’t shoot much on target, there is a good organization and the coach is working very well. Bologna never takes anything for granted and Motta is a strategist. At San Siro, he took advantage of this when Inter pressed less in the second half. We are in a country that ignores merit but there are teams that achieve results with good play and Bologna play very well.”
Joshua Zirkzee has proved indispensable for Motta and Bologna this season so far, and Sacchi thinks the Dutchman makes for an excellent striker.
“He’s without a doubt an excellent striker with important technique and notable quality. Motta would perhaps need a striker who can attack spaces close to him, but Zirkzee is doing well as a lone centre-forward: he tracks back, defends the ball, and works with his teammates.”
Finally, Sacchi dished on Bologna’s chances of starring in Europe in the near future.
“It’s too early to say, Bologna is a strange city whose palate is difficult to satisfy, but the team plays very well and the collective is strong. I think they can be happy with the game expressed and certainly there are stronger teams, but coaches like Motta can reduce the gap.”
“Giovanni Sartori? Great teams are only created if there are great personalities behind them and Sartori’s Bologna have signed valuable young people, who must be given time to grow.”
