Saelemaekers to Try to Earn His Permanence at Milan

Milan have set a robust valuation for Alexis Saelemaekers since he’s in demand following a solid loan spell at Bologna. It’s not entirely certain the utility man will indeed leave, though. He’ll try to convince Paulo Fonseca to give him another chance, Calciomercato informs.

The Belgian winger was fielded and showed well in the first pre-season friendly. The Rossoneri were surprised the Felsinei didn’t exercise their €12M option to buy. New coach Vincenzo Italiano was instrumental in the call. They eventually acquired Nicolò Cambiaghi for a slightly inferior some.

Saelemaekers is wanted especially in the Premier League. Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Nottingham Forest are reportedly hot on his trail. The Rossoneri would like to pocket €20M but could settle for a little less eventually.

The 25-year-old recorded 4 goals and 3 assists in 32 games with the Rossoblù in 2023/2024. Instead, he spent five seasons in San Siro, hitting the net on 10 occasions in 140 matches. Fonseca could try to turn him into an offensive-minded right-back if he stayed. He’d compete with Davide Calabria and Alessandro Florenzi at that point.

Our Take on Saelemaekers

He’s a decent player, but the Rossoneri moved on a year ago, and it’d be weird if they changed their mind despite having a different coach. His transition to a new role is possible on paper but improbable at Milan as Fonseca hinted at having a cautious fullback there to balance out Theo Hernandez. It’d be easier in a team that uses a 3-5-2 scheme. If he’s still available, it wouldn’t be surprising if Juventus targeted him late.
