Sampdoria Coach Stankovic Elated with First Serie A Win

Serbia legend Dejan Stankovic has managed to register his first victory as a Serie A coach, as his Sampdoria outfit came away 1-0 winners at newly-promoted Cremonese on Monday evening. Il Doria’s previous match saw them beat Ascoli 9-8 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at full-time in the Coppa Italia second round, but it is this clean sheet win that will stay in the ex-Lazio and Inter icon’s memory.

Speaking to DAZN (via FCInterNews) after the match, Stankovic expressed his elation at the result.

“I felt complete emotion. It is as if we had played at home, the fans gave us their confidence from the first to the last second. The guys on the pitch and in the stands were spectacular. We have made mistakes but we analyzes it and found a way to win by suffering. We put the desire and sacrifice, then in the end, luck, which you must respect, rewards you.”

Omar Colley scored the winner in the 78th minute, before which the two teams played out a rather bleak affair. When quizzed if he was disappointed with their showing in the first hour, he swiftly backed his team.

“Disappointment is a big word, the boys gave everything. I tried to put them in the physical and mental condition to resist until the end with organization.”

Sampdoria meet Inter next in the league on October 29 at the Giuseppe Meazza, and the ex-Nerazzurri legend says he hasn’t thought about the match yet.

“No, I enjoy this victory. There will be days to think about it. Emotions? I enjoy the victory with Sampdoria, thank you.”

Despite the win, the Genoa outfit still see themselves reeling in the bottom three. They will meet a hungry Inter side next, who sit in seventh position in the league table.
