Sampdoria’s Mikkel Damsgaard Close to Coming Back

Mikkel Damsgaard is undoubtedly one of the top players in the Sampdoria squad. However, the youngster has been unable to prove his worth this year, due to a physical problem that has accompanied him since the beginning of the season. What looked like a minor injury to his right knee turned into a bad infection that has kept him at bay since October.

Last year, the Danish international made 35 appearances in Serie A, scoring 2 goals. On top of that, he was called-up to the national team for the European championship, where Denmark reached the Semi Finals and Mikkel played a key role.

These are significant numbers, considering that the attacking midfielder came from a second-tier league like the Danish one and also keeping in mind his young age – he was born in 2000.

After his return to Sampdoria, who pushed back many approaches by top clubs for a possible transfer of their young talent, it seemed that this could be the season of consecration for Damsgaard. However, on 3 October 2021, his ordeal began during the match against Udinese as he was forced to leave the field due to a seemingly slight injury.

From then on, the young Dane disappeared from the football radars, with no clear expectations about his possible return.

However, it now seems that his comeback is getting closer. At the end of March, Mikkel returned to Genoa to resume training with the Sampdoria technical staff. Given the nature of his injury, the recovery process is proceeding very slowly and cautiously.

To give the player some confidence, it is possible that the Danish international will be already included in the squad by coach Marco Giampaolo for Saturday’s match against Salernitana, as reported by Genoa-based newspaper Il Secolo XIX.

It will likely take a few more games to see him back on the pitch but, overall, it would seem that Mikkel Damsgaard is starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
