Sarri Explains Why Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto Cannot Function Together

As Lazio were held to a stalemate at the hands of Marseille at the Stadio Olimpico in a decisive clash, Maurizio Sarri has given his thoughts on the Biancocelesti’s tactical dressing in the final-third by saying that two of his key players cannot function together upfront.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia in his post-match press conference (via Tuttomercatoweb), Sarri explained how his side could have grabbed a victory with a ‘bit more luck’.

He said: “It was a good performance against a very good team. The sense at the start was we were lacking sharpness, while in the final 30 minutes we could’ve done with a bit more luck.

Ciro Immobile relentless performance provided Lazio with a glimmer of hope but he ultimately could not manage to break the deadlock after being ruled narrowly for offside and even striking the frame of the goal.

“It felt like we could’ve broken the deadlock at any moment, so there’s some regret over the result. We looked solid, believed to the end in victory and almost did it,” he explained.

Luis Alberto was benched for the clash for the second time in two matches, hence giving Sergej Milinkovic-Savic the opportunity to star upfront – a streak that is going to continue, confirmed Sarri.

“At this moment, Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto cannot play together. After the latest game, I realised it wouldn’t happen. If we are up against a more defensive opponent, then we could try that, but we watched Luis in training over the last few days and decided he is better suited when the game is played at a slower tempo,” he commented.

Lazio sit second in Group E with three points, four behind leaders Galatasaray, who remain unbeaten in Europe so far after three matchdays.
