Sarri Says Star Wants Out, Talks Ronaldo Regret and Mourinho

Maurizio Sarri rejoiced for the opportunity of being given time and new signings at Lazio and looked back at his previous stints in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“My ideal style is the one we achieved in the final year at Napoli, where everybody was completely involved. I stayed too shortly at Juventus and Chelsea to have a major impact. Furthermore, there’s more individualism nowadays, and not just in football. I don’t like it but you have to adjust, and I partly did too.”

The gaffer discussed his time with Cristiano Ronaldo.

“My regret is not coaching him when he was a youngster. He established himself through a certain type of football and became a global icon. The team had to adapt to him, and not the other way around. He bagged 37 goals that season. It’s not easy to convince somebody like that to change. Juventus had reached the end of a cycle when I joined, and I realized it right away.”

Sarri stated that Luis Alberto and Francesco Acerbi want to leave Lazio.

“For the second year in a row, the midfielder told us he wished to finish his career in Spain, more precisely at Sevilla. I don’t know whether he’ll still be with us in September. He’s an intelligent guy and a great player, whose character is a little mercurial. The defender asked out and we’ll try to satisfy his request. We planned accordingly.”

The veteran manager closed with some remarks about José Mourinho.

“I find him likeable overall. Our divergences stem from our different backgrounds. I’ve came up in the amateurs, where you have to mold players, while he began at Barcelona and invested more on the quality of his squads.”
