Sarri Slams Lazio Players for Lack of Effort vs Inter

Lazio lost their second game in a row last Sunday, coming apart late against Inter and falling 1-3. Coach Maurizio Sarri was displeased with the effort level of his players. He made it known publicly and more vigorously behind closed doors, La Repubblica informs.

He was diplomatic in his post-game remarks.

“It’s our fault that the tide turned. We became yielding after 65 minutes. We were too passive physically and mentally. It was almost as if we were just waiting to concede.”

Sarri warned his team at intermission, but he didn’t get his message across.

“We are winning, but we aren’t playing well. We have to hold the ball and don’t lose focus.”

According to the publication, the gaffer had an expletive-filled tirade after the final whistle. He targeted in particular Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto, who didn’t hustle as much in the second half.

The manager, who was also fuming about giving up three goals since it vanquished their lead over the Nerazzurri in head-to-head matches, was backed by Nicolò Casale.

“In stadiums like San Siro, you can’t afford to stop running after opponents. We were the best defense in the league until yesterday, not because we are great, but thanks to team play and the work of midfielders and strikers. It was lacking against Inter in some instances. When you face sides and players of this caliber, they punish you.”

Sarri will continue hammering the point home in practice ahead of the midweek round. He’s afraid his squad started resting on its laurels too early believing to have already clinched the Champions League qualification, but that’s not yet the case.
