Maurizio Sarri gave a brief speech to the players before handing over his resignation and leaving the Formello training center for good. The Biancocelesti have elevated his right-hand man Giovanni Martusciello for now. It’s unclear if the choice is permanent yet, Alfredo Pedullà informs.
The boss stated.
“I’ve noticed that you no longer follow me. Some of you are too different from last season. I’ve decided to step down. If I’m the problem, I’ll remove myself so you can maybe turn things around.”
His words were quickly leaked to the press even though Sarri spoke only with the squad. Some asked him to stay, but there wasn’t an uproar against his choice. He leaves a year of his contract and €5M on the table.
The rest of the coaching staff didn’t resign nor was sacked. Lead assistant Martusciello will helm Lazio against Frosinone on Saturday while the higher-ups ponder what to do next.
The candidacy of Tommaso Rocchi, who guides a youth team, lost steam. Miroslav Klose, who coached Altach in the past campaign, self-proposed but hasn’t been contacted at this stage. Instead, some intermediaries offered Igor Tudor, who would be the permanent gaffer and not a caretaker manager.
Our Take on Lazio and Sarri
Everything is always overly dramatic with the Biancocelesti, but the season is already down the drain, other than for the Coppa Italia. Tudor is a fine coach but there will be more alluring options if they wait it out.
