Sassuolo player Nicolas Schiappacasse was arrested in Uruguay on charges of firearm possession. The 23-year-old Neroverdi player, who is currently waiting for the renewal of his loan deal with Uruguayan team Peñarol, was caught in possession of a nine-millimeter pistol with eight ammunition and a drug pill.
Schiappacasse was stopped by the police of Maldonado for a routine check. The car was driven by a 22-year-old man with a criminal record and, in addition to the player, there were two girls of 22 and 18 years. The four were all heading to the stadium to watch a friendly match between Peñarol and Nacional.
According to law enforcement, the player tried to throw the weapon away when he saw the Police. Schiappacasse will temporarily remain in custody and could face charges as he allegedly claimed to be carrying the weapon with the goal of handing it over to a person once inside the stadium.
The president of Peñarol, Ignacio Ruglio, commented:
“Schiappacasse is not under contract with us but we know what to do if the allegations will be confirmed.”
