Serie A Final Verdicts: Spezia and Verona to Battle in Relegation Playout

The Serie A issued more verdicts on Sunday night, but the season is not over yet. While the roster of European participants was determined, with Atalanta and Roma defending their edge over Juventus and qualifying to the Europa League, the battle for relegation will continue next week as Spezia and Verona must go head-to-head in a single game playout.

After 90 and more minutes of football, the Serie A league table showed the exact same situation as before kick off, with Atalanta preserving a one-point lead over Roma and a two-point one over Juve (all three teams won their tests tonight), while the Aquilotti and the Scaligeri could not be separated at the bottom of the table as they both lost their games.

However, that doesn’t mean that there were no emotions tonight as the situation changed multiple times, before the scores of the final games would be set as follows:

Atalanta vs Monza 5-2
Udinese vs Juventus 0-1
Milan vs Verona 3-1
Roma vs Spezia 2-1

The playout between Spezia and Verona will be played at 8.45 PM next Sunday, June 11, at a venue still to be determined.

Below our live updates from this thrilling calcio night:

FULL TIME – Roma vs Spezia 2-1

After 15 minutes of stoppage time, the last game of the night ended as Roma came from behind to overcome Spezia. However, this was not the last game of the season as a relegation playout will be needed to determine who between Spezia and Verona will drop to Serie B.

Thanks to tonight’s win, Roma maintained their one-point lead over Juventus and the possibility to play in the Europa League next season again. The Old Lady, on the other hand, must settle for a ticket to the Conference League.

FULL TIME – Atalanta vs Monza 5-2

Atalanta entertained their fans at the Gewiss Stadium as Teun Koopmeiners was the absolute star of the night with three goals. The Bergamaschi confirmed their fifth spot in the table and came back to European football (they will play in the Europa League) after missing out this season…

FULL TIME – Milan vs Verona 3-1

Milan comfortably beat the Scaligeri with a goal from Giroud and a brace from Rafael Leao. Verona can now only hope that Roma beat Spezia to face the Aquilotti in a relegation playout…

FULL TIME – Udinese vs Juventus 0-1

A lone goal from Federico Chiesa was enough for Juventus to raid the Dacia Arena. However, as long as Roma maintain their 2-1 lead over Spezia, the Bianconeri will need to settle for a Conference League spot next season…

Minute 92 – Milan’s Third, Atalanta’s Fifth

Rafael Leao scored his second goal of the night to build a two-goal cushion for Milan, while Luis Muriel added another one to Atalanta’s tally:

Minute 85 – Rafael Leao Puts Milan Upfront Again!

Rafael Leao celebrated his recent contract renewal in the best possible way, driving the ball past Lorenzo Montipó with a clinical left foot shot. Leao’s 14th league goal this season put Verona in danger again…

Minute 65 – Roma Fans Stand with Mourinho

The Roma supporters just unrolled a banner to show their gratitude to the Special One, who is not on the bench tonight as he is serving a one-match ban. The Ultras’ banner reads:

“Only one man in charge…Mourinho with us for 1000 years”

Minute 61 – Verona’s Coach Bocchetti Sent Off

The Scaligeri‘s coach was sent off  for his reiterated protests at the referee’s decisions. Since a few minutes, Verona have started to be a bit more proactive.

Half Time – Spezia Safe, Juventus in Conference League

Half time. So far, these are the verdicts: A disappointing Verona side is on the edge of relegation as they are succumbing 0-1 to Milan, courtesy of an Olivier Giroud spot kick.

Spezia took the lead at the Stadio Olimpico early in their game, but Nicola Zalewski equalized for Roma. Still, one point is enough so far for the Aquilotti to have the edge over Verona and maintain their Serie A status.

One point is also good for Roma as, due to Juventus’ goalless draw with Udinese, the Giallorossi still have a one-point lead over the Bianconeri, which means a spot in next season’s Europa League – while Max Allegri’s side would land in the Conference League.

Atalanta have built a comfortable two-goal cushion over Monza, thanks to a brace from Teun Koopmeiners. The Bergamaschi‘s fifth spot in the table – which also translates into a ticket to the Europa League – doesn’t seem at risk.

Atalanta vs Monza 2-0

Milan vs Verona 1-0
Roma vs Spezia 1-1

Milan vs Verona 1-0
Roma vs Spezia 1-1

Minute 43 – Zalewski Equalizes for Roma

Verona got a hand from Roma as Nicola Zalewski drew level for Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. The Polish-Italian had the best of Jeroen Zoet with a tricky cross that bounced into the back of the net with the help of Edoardo Bove’s attempted deflection.

Spezia and Verona are now back at 32 points, which would require a playout to determine the last team relegated from Serie A:

Atalanta vs Monza 1-0
Udinese vs Juventus 0-0
Milan vs Verona 0-0
Roma vs Spezia 1-1

Minute 31 – Bonucci Hits the Post!

Leonardo Bonucci went close to open the scoring for Juventus, but his close-range header hit Marco Silvestri’s crossbar. After a quiet start, the Old Lady has been slowly taking control of the operations at the Allianz Stadium…

Minute 26 – Radio Silence from Verona

With Spezia taking the lead in Rome, Verona would need to beat Milan to reach the Aquilotti at 34 points and face them in a relegation playout. However, Marco Zaffaroni and Salvatore Bocchetti’s side has been anything but aggressive so far…

Milan have been pretty much in control even though they didn’t record any relevant scoring chance.

Minute 12 – Koopmeiners Scores for Atalanta

Another winning header, this time for Atalanta. Teun Koopmeiners opened the scoring against Monza the Gewiss Stadium. The Dutchman’s goal is helping the Orobici defender their fifth place in the table, which would grant them an Europa League ticket.

The Serie A 2022/23 ends tonight with the last five games in Matchday 38, which will all kick off at 9.00 PM CET. Napoli have secured their third Scudetto and will be enjoying a well-deserved celebration at home, while Lazio, Inter and Milan have grabbed the additional three Champions League spots.

However, the 5th, 6th, and 7th positions in the Serie A table are still up in the air. Just two points separate Atalanta (61), Roma (60), and Juventus (59) who will fight to get a place in either the Europa League or the Conference League.

Atalanta receive Monza, who have nothing more to ask to their impressive maiden season in the top-flight, while Juventus travel to Udine to face Udinese, who have nothing more to fight for either.

On the other hand, Roma will host Spezia at the Stadio Olimpico, with the Aquilotti still involved in a distance battle to the death with Verona to avoid relegation. Verona will play Milan at the San Siro.

The two relegation strugglers are tied at 31 points in the table. Should they end even on points, a play-out will be needed to decide who will join the already-relegated Cremonese and Sampdoria in Serie B next season.

With so much at stake in the last 90 minutes of this season’s campionato, The Cult of Calcio will provide live updates from all the remaining four key games:

Milan vs Verona 0-0
