Serie A Heavyweights Tag Uruguay Talent for Summer Move

Uruguay prodigy Agustin Alvarez is the up-and-coming name in South America after a breakthrough 2021 campaign in the Uruguayan Primera Division with Penarol, having scored 23 goals in 40 appearances enroute the club’s record 51st national league title.

With a host of clubs already being linked to him as early as last year, including the Milan giants and Fiorentina, Penarol president Ignacio Ruglio has commented of the youngster’s future with regards to the transfer market.

Speaking to broadcaster Teledolce (via TUTTOmercatoweb), Ruglio revealed that an offer by an unnamed club was turned down in the previous winter transfer window.

“We have already turned down a first offer of €14m for 80% of its price tag, asking for one million more,” he disclosed.

Ruglio further went on to discuss that two Italian clubs are heavily interested in the young talent’s services, but didn’t disclose the name of the suitors.

He said: “The race is currently between two Italian clubs. It will start in June, it is a promise that we made him and we have already kept him for another year, and there were already offers at the time.”

The 20-year-old’s contract at his youth club expires in the summer of 2024, but it is likely that one of Milan, Inter or Fiorentina might snap him up before the end of this year.
