Serie A Live Updates: Fiorentina 2-0 Juventus, Atalanta 0-1 Empoli

Final Whistle: Fiorentina Return to Europe

On the back of a deserved win over an unmotivated Juventus, Fiorentina managed to book a place in a European competition for the first time since 2016/17. On the other hand, Atalanta spectacularly succumbed to a last-day defeat at the hands of their visitors Empoli, but their result had very little implication due to the Viola’s victory.

Therefore, Fiorentina will play in the Europa Conference League next season, while the Orobici find themselves out of Europe after taking part in the Champions League in the last three seasons.

As for Lazio, their entertaining 3-3 draw against Verona was enough to seal the fifth spot and subsequently secure a spot in Europa League’s group stage, leaving their rivals Roma in 6th place.

The Situation

As we mentioned earlier, the main battle taking place tonight is for the seventh spot in the table. At the moment, Atalanta and Fiorentina are par in terms of points with 59 each. However, the Viola have the advantage thanks to a super head-to-head, having won both fixtures against Gian Piero Gasperini’s men this season.

Therefore, the Tuscans only need to match the result of Atalanta on the final round of the season in order to book their place in Conference League next season. As for the Orobici, they will have to earn a positive result against Empoli and await a gift from Juventus.

As for the two Europa League spots, the two capital sides have already secured the 5th and 6th place, but it remains to be seen which club will finish ahead of its arch rival. Aside from bragging rights, the team that secures fifth spot will head directly towards the group stage, while the sixth will have to earn its place through qualifiers and will be forced to start its season earlier than intended.

After beating Torino on Friday, Roma temporarily sit 5th thanks to their superior head-to-head, but Lazio only need one point from their home fixture against Verona to restore their place.
