Ok, this was a pretty difficult quiz and indeed only few people managed to get it right. This week’s mysterious team is Napoli depicted in a pre-season game ahead of the 1965-66 Serie A campaign.
Only the most aged Napoli fans may remember the Azzurri wearing such a stylish white jersey with a blue diagonal band, but this outfit coming straight from the 1960s has a special meaning in the history of the Partenopei.
Napoli had been donning it since a few seasons, back in the days when they were far from being a regular presence in the Italian top-flight. Indeed, President Roberto Fiori’s squad had just regained access to Serie A after two seasons in the second division.
For the occasion, the President was willing to show the Napoli meant business and embellished their roster with the signing of Serie A stars Josè Altafini from Milan and Omar Sivori from Juventus. You may recognize them in the middle of the front row – second and third from the left.
At 27, the Italo-Brazilian Altafini was still a fearsome presence. Juve’s legendary Cabezòn, albeit past his prime, would also prove instrumental to the lead the Partenopei to a shocking third place in the table and to conquering their first international trophy – the Coppa delle Alpi ahead of Juventus.
All while donning their iconic blue diagonal band jersey.
