Three months after the re-election as president of Serie A, Paolo Dal Pino has been asked to resign from his position by seven clubs. Juventus, Inter, Atalanta, Napoli, Lazio, Fiorentina, and Hellas Verona formally stated that they no longer support him, as Il Sole 24 Ore first reported.
In a letter, the sides accuse the official of malpractice and are threatening to sue him for damages. They believe he handled poorly the recent sale of the TV rights and the negotiation with the hedge funds, hurting their finances. Most of the outfits changed their stance and rejected the offer to create a media company coming from a consortium formed by CVC, Advent, and FSI, which would have owned a stake.
Dal Pino is being blamed for stalling the distribution of TV rights to tie it up with the project involving the funds, of which he was a major proponent. On the other hand, teams thought those talks to be already at a dead-end because of the intense opposition against it within the League.
After several votes, DAZN eventually won the auction for €840M, replacing Sky as the main broadcast for Serie A in Italy for the next three years. A residual package of matches currently remains vacant after the initial deadline expired without any satisfying offer.
The clubs are also reportedly discontent because the Stadio Olimpico will be open to the fans for Euro 2021, while there has not been any indication the same will happen in domestic matches.
