Simeone Talked Into Staying Despite Desire to Play More

Giovanni Simeone is unhappy with the limited game time he has had with Rudi Garcia and Walter Mazzarri this season. With Victor Osimhen unavailable, he expected to start versus Monza on Friday, or at least play a decent chunk of the game. Instead, he subbed in only very late.

Per La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Tuttomercatoweb), it’s not a proper case yet, but the issue is simmering. Despite being a backup, the Argentine had a decent role in their title-winning campaign, recording 8 goals in 32 appearances in Serie A and the Champions League in 2022/2023.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Simeone voiced his desire to leave Napoli to feature more consistently. He’d have offers from England and Spain if made available. He seriously pondered such a possibility, and the interest in his services wouldn’t be lacking.

However, he changed his mind after talking with president Aurelio De Laurentiis. The owner told him he wouldn’t be put up for sale at least till June. The Azzurri need him in January since Osimhen will partake in AFCON.

Our Take on Simeone and Napoli

Every small problem gets magnified when things aren’t going well, but it’s true that their two coaches haven’t taken him into consideration as much as Luciano Spalletti. He’s a perfect super sub, and his skill hasn’t been exploited this season. It doesn’t make any sense for the club to sell him early on, but his departure could perhaps come together in the final days of January, closer to the return of their star.
