Simone Inzaghi Pressing Inter to Sign Lazio Veteran Outcast

Inter were handed a big blow when Juventus confirmed the signing of long-linked target Gleison Bremer from Torino. The Nerazzurri seem to have decided to stick to familiar faces – Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni – as of now, but do not entirely rule out signing a new stopper. Simone Inzaghi’s former favorite and Lazio outcast Francesco Acerbi is a name in contention.

According to latest reports from Corriere dello Sport (via FCInter1908), Acerbi’s agent Federico Pastorello was recently seen in Milan at the Vialle della Liberazione. However, according to the intermediary himself, he wasn’t there to talk about his client’s future.

“We had a chat in general, not about Acerbi. We should hear from any club interested. He is a strong player.”

It is understood that ex-Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi, who signed the Italy international for the Biancocelesti in 2018, is keen on reuniting with him for the second time in his career. As per La Repubblica (via LazioNews24), the veteran is seen as a direct replacement for Stefan De Vrij in the Nerazzurri ranks.

However, the Inter management is keen on evaluating other candidates for the defensive role despite Inzaghi personally requesting CEO Beppe Marotta to look into a potential deal. It is touted that the only way a deal might materialize is if Inter do not manage to find an apt defender and if it’s a loan transfer.

Acerbi handed Lazio sporting director Igli Tare and president Claudio Lotito his transfer request at the end of last season after falling out with coach Maurizio Sarri. Sarri has not included the defender in his plans for next season in Rome. The Acerbi Inter axis is a real possibility.

Our Take on Acerbi to Inter

With the experience he possesses, Acerbi will be Inter’s most senior defender. He can become a leader at the back for Simone Inzaghi, who put faith in him time and again during their days together at Lazio. The ex-Sassuolo man’s days in Rome are over after falling out. And there is no better way to prove himself than at fellow rivals Inter, however controversial that may seem.
