Following the Partenopei’s 4-2 victory over Dutch giants Ajax at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium within match-week four of the Champions League., Napoli boss Spalletti heaped praise for his squad following their incredible European run.
As it stands, Napoli currently lead Group A with a total of 12 points after having won all of their four outings within the continental competition. As a result, they are the first club within the Serie A to have secured their spot within the Champions League after having missed on the tournament last season.
In addition, the Azzurri have maintained an unbeaten status within 13 games across all competitions, their most successful start to a campaign within their club’s history.
In the press conference following a convincing victory over Ajax, Spalletti expressed the immense amount of pride he felt within his squad in a press conference, relayed by La Gazzetta dello Sport:
“I am the first coach to have guided the guys who were able to do something immense. In this qualification there is the desire and determination to do well in this competition. The players were good at absorbing all the charge of the environment, you are involved and carried away by the audience, my head was almost spinning with the screams of the stadium.
“The schemes no longer exist in football, the spaces are no longer between the lines but between the opponents. It therefore becomes essential to know how to recognize them at the right times, with the courage to always start actions. The Champions League once again showed how difficult it is: on the only distraction, with Anguissa injured, Ajax got the game back on its feet. Every time the pace dropped and we lacked continuity, they arrived in front of the goalkeeper.”
