Spalletti Mulls Surprising Exclusion from Next Squad

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has a conundrum on his hands, as Ciro Immobile isn’t a lock to be called up for the next Euro qualifiers despite being named the captain of the team. The Lazio ace has had a slow start. Gianluigi Donnarumma would inherit the armband should that be the case, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs (via Tuttomercatoweb).

After big problems at the position in previous years, there’s now a logjam. The Biancocelesti legend has to compete with Mateo Retegui, Giacomo Raspadori, and Gianluca Scamacca. It’s unlikely that all four will be in the squad. Plus, Andrea Pinamonti has done well early. Moise Kean is also always in consideration.

The choice could come down to fitness. Immobile and the Napoli attacker are currently the healthiest. The Genoa newcomer suffered a knee bruise in the past game. The problem isn’t too serious, but he’s a question mark for the upcoming Milan clash and the Italy games.

Scamacca returned to full training following a thigh strain and will get minutes either Thursday or Sunday, thus becoming an option also for the Azzurri. On the other hand, he hasn’t played much this season.

Our Take on Immobile and Italy

It’d be a legitimate question mark if Retegui and Scamacca were in perfect shape and humming, but it probably won’t be hard to exclude one of the two and enlist the Lazio captain and Raspadori.
