Luciano Spalletti addressed the unusual last few days at the Coverciano training center following the Nicolò Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali cases in an interview with Sky.
“It was a tough night. There’s always angst when you need to obtain results. It was different, and there’s a lot of bitterness for what happened. The whole team is close to them. We’re very sorry. We’ll continue to support them now that they are in the spotlight. It’s right for justice to take its course. If something irregular took place, then it’ll be fair to pay for it. We try to help them defend themselves.”
Spalletti explained why they were sent home.
“It wasn’t truly our decision, but it was the correct call. We couldn’t have used two players who were in shock. Let’s focus on the games. We lost two champions, but we’re still a very strong team. I hope to see them back here as soon as possible. But the others are good too. We have infinite potential and don’t look for alibis. We’ll either win, or we’re not at the level Italy should be.”
Spalletti won’t have Federico Chiesa and Mattia Zaccagni versus Malta. The former has left the Azzurri camp altogether to return to Turin, while the latter could be available versus England.
“We must be happy to wear these colors. We’ve been chosen to have the chance to be at the top, in life and in this line of work. All eyes are on us to prove our values and intelligence.”
