Italy boss Luciano Spalletti has assumed full responsibility for Gli Azzurri’s embarrassing performance in a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland. Lamenting a lack of time to get familiar with the squad and several injury woes, the former Napoli manager admitted the Italians’ dismal Euro 2024 exit was his fault.
“The responsibility is always mine,” the Italy coach said in the post-game interview, as quoted by Yahoo Sports. “There’s no blame to everyone. I want to stress this. I want to thank the players for having brought me here.
“I need to get to know my team a bit better,” Spalletti continued. “We also had a number of players who suffered injuries, players I was counting on, and you saw that in terms of intensity, we were under par.“
Switzerland thoroughly outclassed Italy at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas fired Murat Yakin’s side to a well-deserved triumph as they had the reigning title holders on the roops from the get-go.
Italy could’ve been down two or three goals before halftime if it wasn’t for Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, it took Vargas less than a minute into the second half to land a killing blow with a scintillating finish from the edge of the box.
Despite taking control of possession after falling two goals down, Italy couldn’t create any scoring chance for the rest of the game. Spalletti’s questionable selection choices eventually returned to bite the Italians as they stood no chance against the Swiss.
