Spezia Register Surprising No-Shot Record in Napoli Win

Napoli succumbed to their fourth loss of the Serie A campaign – falling seven points behind leaders Inter and three behind second-placed Milan – as they lost 1-0 to Spezia, credit to an own goal by Partenopei defender Juan Jesus.

However, it was not only the score line that was the most surprising aspect of the result. Thiago Motta’s ‘Aquilotti’ managed to secure the victory without taking a single shot on target, as they grabbed and held on to a lead from Juan Jesus’ own goal just before half time.

They are now the first side to have won a league game without firing any shot on target since 2004/05 – when Opta first started collecting football data.

Spezia managed to register 8 shots, out of which none ended up being on target. In stark contrast, Napoli’s relentlessness was visible through their 26 shots, out of which seven ended up on target.

Spezia, for the moment, save their skins from the relegation zone, sitting on 16 points from 19 games, ahead of relegation contenders Salernitana, Cagliari and Genoa.
