The legal controversy between Sporting CP, Lille, and Rafael Leao isn’t over yet, despite a previous ruling and an intervention by Milan, which helped them seal the deal with their star, who didn’t want to ink a renewal before settling the dispute.
Per Record (via Goal), the Portuguese club has filed an appeal to the CAS. FIFA decided it was entitled to €20.6M, interests included, for the attackers’ rescission and transfer to France back in the day.
Instead, Sporting CP want €45M, the full amount of the release clause present in the contract of Leao in 1999. He had forced his way out following an incident with the fans, and Lille scooped him up.
Milan aren’t directly involved in the matter but smoothed things over following the previous sentence. They gave Les Dogues €20M, basically the entire amount, a year ago to push the extension of their winger past the finish line.
The Rossoneri and the Ligue 1 side technically revisited the terms of the previous deal. Lille formally renounced their re-sale clause and their faculty to ask for further cash in case the CAS ruled against them following the new payment.
Leao moved from France to Serie A for €50M in 2019. He’s now under contract until 2028 with a €175M release clause. He has posted 6 goals and 8 assists in 27 matches this season.
