Milan have been on the up and up in recent seasons, and coach Stefano Pioli believes that the Scudetto win last season is only a start in their new journey. The Italian tactician signed a contract renewal at the end of last month, extending his deal for two further years until the summer of 2025.
During the ‘All Around Soccer’ event at the University of Milano, Pioli was invited as a guest for the conference and asked what’s next on his mind for the Rossoneri.
“The goal with Milan is to continue to grow both in Italy and in Europe. Because we are Milan, because we are a top club . After the Scudetto I found the most determined team. If I renewed it is because I see a future path for a team that can move up.” (via Gianluca Di Marzio)
He also took some time to draw light upon the demise of Fiorentina icon Davide Astori four years ago.
“The experience lived with the death of Astori really touched us. It improved me as a coach in the sense of closeness. Nobody could foresee it and I felt the need to be close to my players. I knew and appreciated them even more than in what I thought before. Listening to them and talking to them is very important for our work.”
Pioli first took charge of Milan in October 2019 following the sacking of Marco Giampaolo. His Rossoneri outfit have grown leaps and bounds since then. However, they play catch-up to a strong Napoli side this season. A last 16 tie against Tottenham Hotspur also awaits, as they seek to make it to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in over a decade.
