Struggling Roma Defender Tipped to Leave Next Summer

Marash Kumbulla doomed Roma in the recent Serie A fixture versus Sassuolo with a silly red card and a penalty kick in the final minutes of the first half. The defender re-gained the trust of the coach after being among those blamed for their collapse against Bodo/Glimt, but his performances have often been poor.

According to Calciomercato, the Giallorossi will look to offload the youngster in the summer. They already tried to do so in the past to no avail. He was signed from Verona for €29.5M, including two makeweights, and his contract is up in 2025.

Despite his Roma displays, Kumbulla has multiple Serie A suitors. His former coach Ivan Juric would happily reunite with him, but he’s not a lock to stay at Torino. Bologna, Fiorentina, and especially Lecce could target the Albanian international too. He might be involved in a large deal with the Salentini since the capital side is interested in some of their talents.

Per Bild (via Sportitalia), the Giallorossi are seeking a new defender in Bundesliga. They are eyeing Union Berlin star Danilho Doekhi and Wolfsburg’s center-back Micky van de Ven. Other European powerhouses, including Juventus, are after the 21-year-old Dutchman.

Our Take on Kumbulla and the Roma Defense

He looked like a surefire prospect but proved he wasn’t cut for the big stage. The problem is that his price tag is robust considering how much they paid. Smaller clubs won’t disburse hefty enough fees. A loan spell to lessen the financial blow is more likely. On the other hand, his departure would open up a hole they may struggle to fill. It’s already uncertain whether they will keep Diego Llorente. They might not have the funds for multiple purchases.
