Surprise Package Parma Shock Roma with Mihaila, Hernani Goals

Parma were the surprise package of Serie A Round 27 as they shocked Roma with goals from Valentin Mihaila and Hernani to come back to winning ways after 17 games. The last time the Gialloblu had made a full score in Serie A was on November 30.

Perhaps Paulo Fonseca and Roma felt overconfident after thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk in their Europa League test on Thursday, but the Giallorossi were totally annihilated today. They lost the fourth place in the table to Atalanta and gift-wrapped three golden points to Parma on their way to safety.

Roma were expected to take control of the operations from the beginning and they did so but were punished by the Crociati on the counter after just nine minutes. Dennis Man dashed past Marash Kumbulla and sent in the ball for his fellow countryman Valentin Mihaila, who took advantage of Gianluca Mancini’s missed clearance to draw first blood for Parma.

The Giallorossi‘s reaction was confused and didn’t produce more than a few shots from Edin Dzeko and Stephan El Shaarawy, while Lorenzo Pellegrini demanded a penalty for an alleged Hernani fould that was not allowed. At half time, Parma’s lead looked legitimate and deserved.

Pau Lopez saved from Hernani right after the restart, then El Shaarawy had perhaps the biggest chance for Roma to draw level. His curling effort was deflected by Andrea Conti and ended just a few inches too wide.

Parma doubled their lead from the penalty spot, consequence of a shared defensive blunder between Gianluca Mancini and Rogez Ibanez – who knocked down Graziano Pellé in a clumsy attempt to stop him. From the spot, Hernani was stone-cold and made it 2-0 for the Crociati.

Paulo Fonseca’s moves – with Bryan Cristante, Carles Perez, Ryan Reynolds and then Borja Mayoral sent in – didn’t succeed in switching the match momentum as Roma couldn’t come up with anything more than a few chaotic attempts into the Gialloblu‘s area. And so, the most noteworthy thing among the Giallorossi lines ended up being the Serie A debut of 19-year-old Ryan Reynolds.

With this win, Parma suddenly came back to life. Safety is only three points away and, with 11 games still to go, anything can happen for President Kyle Krause’s club.
