The retirement of Wojciech Szczesny was short-lived, as he has given in to the courtship by Barcelona. He’ll take the medicals and put pen to paper in short order. The announcement should arrive on Monday, Relevo’s Mattia Moretto reports.
The goalkeeper had hung his gloves earlier in the summer a few weeks after agreeing to an early contract termination with Juventus. He bid farewell to the fans at the Stadium during the recent clash with Napoli. He motivated the decision saying that he wasn’t in the right headspace for a different experience after his time with the Bianconeri.
Instead, Barcelona persuaded Szczesny after they lost Marc-André Ter Stegen to a brutal knee injury. The Pole discussed the matter with Sport (via Calciomercato).
“I’m in talks with the Blaugrana, and I’m considering joining them. It’s one of the best clubs in the worlds. It’d be disrespectful if I didn’t weigh this option.”
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus will benefit financially by the goalie signing with another team. They’ll save a chunk of his severance package, €4M, as per the terms of his rescission. He hadn’t made up his mind at that point. A move to another side seemed likely back then.
Our Take on Szczesny and Barcelona
The optics aren’t great due to some of his post-retirement remarks and since he seemed at peace with the decision, but, after all, it was rather premature he still had more than something left in the tank last season.
