Italy made it. The Azzurri will defend their European title next year in Germany as a goalless stalemate against Ukraine in Leverkusen was enough for them to make it to Euro 2024. They ended second in Group C, six points adrift of England. Luciano Spalletti and his boys needed at least one point to avoid going through the playoff ordeal. They did not get the win tonight but not for lack of trying.

Luckily for Jorginho, Federico Chiesa soon went into berserk mode and scored twice in the space a few minutes to build a three-goal cushion for the Azzurri. Jorginho’s umpteenth penalty miss was thus quickly forgotten. But not forgiven. The man had some courage, we’ll give him that. Winning was the only thing that mattered tonight at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome as Italy faced their recent times nemesis North Macedonia in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers. And the Azzurri did win, putting five past the North Macedonians, but also conceded two to Blagoja Milevski's side right when it seemed that they had got the job done.
